Councilmember LaBonge to plant trees for Tu B'Shvat, Jewish Arbor Day

Councilmember Tom LaBonge will be joined by students of Yavneh Hebrew Academy and Third Street School to plant trees in celebration of Tu B’Shvat, Jewish Arbor Day, tomorrow, Friday, January 18 at 8:30 a.m. on the front lawn of Yavneh. The school campuses are across the street from one another on Third Street east of Highland Avenue.

Students will plant three trees, two jacarandas and one sequoia, to mark this annual ritual whereby the Jewish people acknowledge the “new year” for trees. It is customary to plant trees and partake of the fruits of the land of Israel to mark the occasion.

“Tu B’Shvat is a great way to replenish our urban forest, beautify our neighborhood schools and teach our youngest citizens about the values of greening our city,” said Councilmember LaBonge, who will be joined by Rabbis Moshe Dear and Daniel Korobkin from Yavneh Hebrew Academy and Asst. Principal Donald Wilson from Third Street School.
