Councilmember Tom LaBonge joined Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Tuesday to lend his support for the Mayor’s new Traffic Relief Initiatives, a series of immediate measures designed to address what Councilmember LaBonge calls “the biggest problem facing the City of Los Angeles today.”

“My number one goal as an elected official is to help implement common sense measures to improve traffic mobility,” said Councilmember LaBonge.

The Mayor’s congestion relief plans, which include a $5.7 million effort to synchronize traffic signals at 256 Mid-Wilshire intersections, “park & pay” digital parking meters, and continued improvement of the city’s streets, are to be funded with existing Los Angeles Department of Transportation resources.

Also included among the initiatives is a plan to dispatch phase IV of the Mayor’s Tiger Team of LADOT traffic officers on Sunset Boulevard from Vermont Avenue to Laurel Canyon Boulevard, including intersections in Council District 4 between Orange Drive and Fairfax Avenue, along with utilizing new License Plate Recognition technology to assist the Tiger Team in keeping L.A. moving.

The initiatives are expected to be enacted over the next three months.
