A very happy group of seniors help cut the ribbon to dedicate the Griffith Park Adult Community Center for adults 50 years and over.
Under sunny skies and a colorful halo of balloons, seniors from six neighborhoods led by Stephanie Vendig, Bea Gold and Lia Lomedico, joined in the long-anticipated opening celebration for the Griffith Park Adult Community Center Thursday.
The center, comprised of trailers used previously as Griffith Observatory Satellite offices, were transplanted to a spot adjacent to Friendship Auditorium and transformed into a full-service senior center.
The project was created at the urging of some very tenacious seniors from the former Silver Lake Senior Club who sought a place of their own. With the help of Councilmemember LaBonge and the staff of CD4 working with the Dept. of Recreation and Parks, this new facility will offer classes, a nutrition program, exercise room, numerous activities and, as importantly, a place for seniors to socialize with like-minded residents.
“What a great day,” said Councilmember LaBonge addressing the 200 or so guests in attendance. “There is little more rewarding in my job than to dedicate a place that has so much love and energy. Congratulations!”
